When you have breathtakingly beautiful mountain landscapes ready to astound you, the only thing to make it better would be a glass of the finest wine; straight from the dramatic vineyards of Mendoza.
Wine tasting in Mendoza
As Louis Pasteur has rightly said, “A bottle of wine contains more philosophy than all the books in the world”. Nestled in the midst of the breath-taking Andes Mountains, the city of Mendoza in Argentina is a natural playground for adventurers and wine-lovers from every corner of the world. The geography of Mendoza ostensibly resembles a desert town surrounded by extensive vineyards, gorgeous plazas and leafy boulevards, and has propelled it to become one of the greatest Wine Capitals of the World.
Natural playground for adventurers
While in Mendoza, depending on what you’re after, you have the choice to stay in the town of Mendoza or near one of the 3 different wine regions, and we chose Lujan de Cuyo. The other two regions of Maipu and Uco Valley are also beautiful and unique in their own way. Located 40 minutes south of the Mendoza city, Lujan de Cuyo is known as the land of ‘Malbec’. Wineries in this region offer unbelievable views of the mountains and Mendoza’s vast wide open spaces.
Mendel Winery is a rustic and small winery in the Lujan de Cuyo area. The host Silvina described their varied and unique wines – we especially liked the Unus, so when you visit, be sure to ask for a taste.
Our next stop was at the winery of Bodega Carmelo Patti, who welcomes his visitors with a beaming smile, helping tour his cement tanks and barrels before cracking open whatever he pleases in his cosy office. He makes premium, well-aged products while most consumers drink young, easy-to-open bottles.
Lujon de Cuyo is part of Mendoza River’s high region and the majority of the vines here are planted with red wines. Although Malbec is the most popular variety, it is not the only one being grown. Wineries are beginning to offer more unique tastings and opening up their own restaurants, thereby creating a space for people to experience their wines in many different ways. It is certainly a place you would love to visit and encounter a euphoric tasting experience worth remembering a lifetime.
